MELAMINE FACED CHIPBOARD – MFC
MFC is one of the most commonly used materials in furniture manufacturing. It is valued for its wide range of decors, durability in everyday use and reasonable price.

WHAT IS MFC?
MFC (Melamine Faced Chipboard) is a wood-based panel made from compressed wood particles, with a decorative melamine surface applied to both sides. This outer layer gives the board its colour, pattern and surface texture, while also helping to protect the core during everyday use.
ADVANTAGES OF MFC
Wide range of decors
One of the main advantages of MFC is its exceptionally wide range of decors. This makes it suitable for a variety of interior styles – from minimalist and Scandinavian interiors to darker, contemporary or more classic spaces. Wood-effect decors can add warmth and a natural feel to an interior, while solid colours create a clean and minimalist look. Stone- or concrete-effect finishes can be used to introduce a more distinctive visual accent. Furniture does not have to be made entirely from a single decor. Two or more colours and textures are often combined – for example, solid-colour fronts paired with a wood-effect decor.
Practical surface
The laminated surface is designed for everyday furniture use. It is easy to maintain, making MFC particularly suitable for furniture that is used frequently. For everyday dirt and dust, a soft damp cloth is usually sufficient. Unlike some natural materials, MFC does not require regular oiling, waxing or other periodic surface treatments. However, MFC is not completely resistant to damage. Harsh cleaning products, abrasive sponges, very hot objects and prolonged exposure to water should be avoided.
Stability and precision
MFC is an industrially manufactured panel material, which means its thickness and dimensions are consistent and predictable. This is particularly important when producing bespoke cabinet furniture, where individual components need to fit together accurately. A properly designed construction makes it possible to manufacture large wardrobes, kitchen furniture systems, shelving, niches and other more complex furniture solutions.

DISADVANTAGES OF MFC – WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER?
Sensitivity to moisture
The laminated surface performs well under normal everyday conditions and occasional moisture. However, the chipboard core is not designed for prolonged direct contact with water. The greatest risk occurs when water reaches an unprotected edge, joint or mechanically damaged area. Moisture entering the chipboard core may cause the material to swell.
Limited options for repairing a damaged surface
Unlike some natural wood surfaces, a laminated surface cannot simply be sanded down and refinished. If a component becomes heavily scratched, chipped or otherwise significantly damaged, replacing the affected furniture component is often the most practical solution.
Edge quality is very important
When MFC is cut, the chipboard core is exposed. For this reason, visible edges of furniture components are finished with dedicated edge banding during the manufacturing process. High-quality edge banding serves several purposes: it gives the component a clean and finished appearance, helps protect the edges against mechanical damage and reduces the risk of moisture reaching the chipboard core.
MFC FURNITURE CARE
-
Everyday care of MFC furniture usually does not require any special products. Dust and everyday dirt can be removed with a soft, slightly damp cloth. After cleaning, we recommend wiping the surface dry.
-
Avoid abrasive sponges, harsh chemical cleaners and leaving water on the surface for extended periods. Spilled liquids, especially near panel joints and edges, should be wiped away immediately.
-
With proper care, high-quality MFC used in well-made furniture can maintain its appearance and functionality for many years.
